The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Basic Life Support or as it is better known the BLS
for Healthcare Providers course trains learners to quickly and effectively identify and treat
life-threatening emergencies. The training includes the administration of high-quality chest
compressions, appropriate ventilations, early use of an AED, and maneuvers to relieve a
foreign object in a choking patient.
Who should attend the BLS for Healthcare Providers course?
The BLS for HCP course is designed for all healthcare professionals as well as any other individuals who needs to learn or be updated on performing CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills both in and out of hospital.
On completion of this course successful candidates will be competent on the following topics:
Effective high-quality CPR for adults, pediatrics, and infants
The Chain of Survival
The use of the AED and the importance of early defibrillation
Effective artificial respirations using an acceptable barrier device
The advantage of a team-based approach to CPR
Maneuvers to relieve foreign-body airway obstructions or choking in adults and infants
The BLS for Healthcare Providers is a prerequisite course for Advanced Cardiac Life Support. All healthcare professionals registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or the South African Nursing Council (SANC) will receive a total of 14 CPD points as well as 1 Ethical point.
